Vijay Amritraj was born in 1953, in Chennai, India to Maggie Dhairyam and Robert Amritraj. Vijay and his two brothers started their education at Don Bosco Egmore and later graduated from Loyola College, Chennai. Playing tennis came naturally in the Amritraj family.
His sports career began in 1973, where Vijay achieved his first significant success reaching the quarter-finals stage at two Grand Slam Men's Singles events. The same year he reached the quarterfinal of Wimbledon and U. S. Open. He compiled a career singles win-loss record 384-296, winning 16 singles titles to go along with 13 in doubles. In the 1980's Vijay had a brief acting career in films such as James Bonds film "Octopussy" and "Star Trek IV". He was also a regular character on "The Last Precinct" NBC series and the sitcom "What a Country!", as well as the television "Hart to Hart". He has since gone on to become a sports commentator, has been a judge at the Miss Universe pageant, and developed a successful multimedia business.
In 2001 Vijay Amritraj was appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace and committed himself to people in need and raising awareness to the issue of drugs, HIV and AIDS. He completed his assignment as a Messenger of Peace in 2006, following which he created the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy and "The Vijay Amritraj Foundation" focusing on people in need, helping and healing to the defenseless and innocent victims of disease, tragedy and circumstance in India.
Vijay, himself is recognized as a "gentleman with values that go beyond winning to caring". Many noteworthy persons are also associated with the Amritraj's Foundation, including World Leaders, Statesmen, Business Leaders, and Philanthropists.
