About speaker:

Carolyn Steel is a leading thinker on food and cities.

Her 2008 book Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives has won international acclaim, and her concept of ‘sitopia’ (food-place) has gained broad recognition as a new way of thinking about the design of cities and the ethical and ecological questions we face in an increasingly urban world.  Mrs. Carolyn is a London-based architect, lecturer and writer, Steel has been a Visiting Lecturer and Design Tutor at Cambridge University, London Metropolitan University and Wageningen University, and she was inaugural Studio Director at the London School of Economics Cities Programme.

Carolyn writes and broadcasts regularly on food, architecture and urbanism, and is in international demand as a speaker. Recent appearances include TEDGlobal, The Nordic Council of Ministers at Rio+20, The Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency, The National Building Museum (Washington DC), The U.S. Green Building Council (NYC), Princeton University, Domus Academy (Milan), and the Melbourne Design Festival. A Rome Scholar in 1995-6, Carolyn won the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Award for Non-Fiction for Hungry City, which was also a BBC Food Programme book of the year. In 2009, The Ecologist magazine profiled her as a '21st Century Visionary'. Carolyn is currently working on a sequel to Hungry City, called The Idea of Food.
