Sir James Fraser Stoddart, Professor at the Northwestern University and Winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
He was elected fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1994, fellow of the German Academy of Natural Sciences in 1999, foreign fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006, and fellow of the American National Academy of Sciences in 2014. In 2016, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and in 2017, he won the Chinese Government Friendship Award and meanwhile was elected foreign fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
Stoddart's research fields mainly involves supramolecular chemistry and molecular machines. He invented a new synthetic molecular machine based on the mechanically interlocked molecular architectures. This mechanical bond concept was seen as a milestone in expansion of the chemical field. The template synthesis method that he developed together with Sauvage based on non-covalent interactions has greatly improved the efficiency for synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecular machines.
