Joelle Pineau is a leading researcher in artificial intelligence and the Vice President of AI Research at Meta (formerly Facebook), where she heads FAIR (Fundamental AI Research). She is also a Professor and William Dawson Scholar at McGill University, where she co-directs the Reasoning and Learning Lab.
Pineau’s work focuses on advancing machine learning, reinforcement learning, robotics, and healthcare AI, with an emphasis on building systems that can learn and reason in complex, real-world environments. She has made significant contributions to the development of decision-making algorithms and the application of AI in high-impact domains such as medicine.
She is a strong advocate for open science and reproducibility in AI research, leading initiatives that promote transparency and accessibility in the field. Pineau has received numerous awards for her contributions to AI and has served in leadership roles within major AI conferences and organizations, including as General Chair of NeurIPS.
