Jeroo Billimoria is an acknowledged “shining example” of the world’s “leading social entrepreneurs” (The Economist, 2006). Jeroo has started nine organizations and has affected the lives of many millions of children worldwide through her work.
Jeroo was conferred the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship (2006), the Schwab Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs (2001), and the Ashoka “Innovators for the Public” Fellowship (1999). Her work and organizations have been profiled in The Economist and Businessweek. A “serial social entrepreneur” (Schwab foundation), Jeroo founded, and is currently leading Aflatoun. Today her organisation has reached 1.3 million children in 94 countries.
She is Founder and Chair of the Board of Child Helpline International, served as Executive Director (2003-2005) and successfully handed over the directorship. Jeroo founded the Childline India Foundation and currently is Honorary Secretary. She has also founded and directed the Indian not-for-profit organization MelJol, now functioning as a Board member. Jeroo also founded the Credibility Alliance.
Aflatoun is a quickly growing global network of child social and financial education programs working in a global partnership with UNICEF. Aflatoun started at the end of 2005 and already reaching over 540 thousand children in 25 countries. Child Helpline International officially launched in 2003. It is the apex body of children’s telephone helplines globally, currently actively operational in 160 countries. It provides a platform for children’s voices to be shared at international forums and the United Nations. Childline India is a national 24-hour phone outreach service for children in need of care and protection. Childline is currently operational in 83 cities/districts in India and has worked with over 3 million children in need of care and protection. MelJol (Most Innovative Project Award 2008, Global Development Network, Japan) is a child rights organization that started Aflatoun in India in 1991 and is now growing to be a national resource center in partnership with the Indian government. The Credibility Alliance is an Indian consortium of voluntary organizations committed towards enhancing accountability and transparency in the voluntary sector through good governance. At present there are 462 voluntary organizations enrolled as members. Jeroo is a globally respected speaker on and advocate of child rights and children’s economic empowerment.
In July 2011, Billimoria founded Child and Youth Finance International, a global network of states, financial entities and educational institutions dedicated to increasing the financial capabilities and financial inclusion of children and youth through collaboration and resource-sharing.
She has been a speaker at the World Economic Forum, the Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurship and at a broad variety of conferences, and has been invited to speak by a range of global corporations, universities and multilateral agencies. Jeroo was Lecturer at the University Tata Institute of Social Sciences from 1991 to 1999.
She holds a Master of Arts in Social Work of, and was awarded best student at, University Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and a Master of Science in Non Profit Management of the New School for Social Research University, New York. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree of Bombay University.
